GIRL ON THE BRIDGE

My girlfriend and I arrived at Kaiaraara Hut just after night fall and with the hut to ourselves we lit the fire in the kitchen, then ventured outside to see the Milky Way perfectly aligned with the Kaiaraara Swing Bridge, a few steps from the hut. Laying on a bed of cold river rocks below I captured her feeling the power and magnificence of our dark sky right through her soul.

A WHALE OF A TAIL

This spot I had my eye on for a few weeks and on a clear night with the Milky Way aligned exactly where I wanted it, I stood in the middle of the road and got my shot. The Milky Way appeared to look like a whale above the beautiful native Toe Toe’s, so it was aptly named “A Whale of a Tail”.

SHOOTING STARS AND CROSSES

St John’s Community Church on Great Barrier Island is possibly the only church in the world where patrons of different denominations worship together, respecting each other’s religious journey. There is a joint agreement among Anglican, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian, where each agrees to take turns in leading the Sunday service.

LADY ISLA IN WAITING

A lady doesn’t like to be kept waiting and I’m sure the Lady Isla is no exception. She must have been so beautiful in her day and now she sits patiently waiting for repair, tucked under the pohutukawa tree in Tryphena Harbour.

MT HEALE ERUPTION

Located on a central ridge and a steep descent from Mt Hobson (621 m), Mt Heale Hut has stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf and Little Barrier Island. The night sky was so breath taking we dragged our bunk mattresses out on to the balcony to sleep the night. It was an incredible experience seeing 24 shooting stars and Mt Heale “erupting” with the Milky Way.

The Iron Maidens.jpg

TWO IRON MAIDENS

We were out fishing in our boat and I spotted these two old rusty iron fishing boats up on the hard. The first fishing boat, originally from the Kaipara Harbour was used for 15 years and the second boat bought as spare parts to renovate and update the first boat. A beautiful array of colours glowing under the Milky Way they may stay that way forever.

FINAL RESTING PLACE

When you see a classic Massey Ferguson tractor embedded and intertwined in vigorously growing Kaikoura grass, it becomes an unexpectedly beautiful centre piece that is just begging to be photographed. It was a very cool winters night as I lay in waiting for the rising Milky Way.

RIDE TO THE STARS

It was such an adventurous and fun night just taking this photo.  The traveller, dressed in her sparkly dress with her early 1900’s luggage is ready to be whoever she chooses to be at her final destination. Who even cares where that will be, it could even be a ride to the stars.

COME SIT WITH ME

On the eastern side of Great Barrier Island in the sand dunes of Medlands Beach is a gorgeous rustic swing in between two huge pohutukawa trees. Can you imagine having a swing here, all alone with all those stars? I was in awe as I took this, just staring up at that Milky Way explosion in the sky.
